2 JUNE 2015 – WORKSHOP: the wearable revolution on your doorstep

Wearables workshop

Workshop Offered on Smart Watches, Wearables, News & Information

Exploring smart watches and other wearable technologies for news media is clearly a hot topic, so the heavy demand for places comes as no surprise for the WAN-IFRA ‘Wearables Workshop’ planned for Sunday, 31 May, ahead of the opening of the World News Media Congress, set to take place in Washington D.C., from 1 to 3 June.

WAN-IFRA’s Global Alliance for Media Innovation, in partnership with CCI and the Stibo Accelerator, has extended registration for the workshop to allow more participants and welcome extra speakers and mentors to meet the demand.

The workshop is the latest in a series from from the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and follows publication of its new report on “Wearables: The key consideration for news publishers.” The report includes some of the leading minds in the industry sharing their thoughts on how wearables might affect news publishers.

The programme for the Washington workshop will include:

– Media and design expert Dr. Mario Garcia who will open the workshop with a talk that frames the ‘wearable revolution’ and who will moderate the idea-generation exercises.

Berlingske Media, one of Denmark’s leading and most innovative publishing houses, sends its Head of Lab, Anders Kring, to share findings from the company’s five-month research project on smart watches and news.

Deniz Ergürel, technology journalist and R&D director for Turkish media group Zaman, was one of the first to experience the Apple Watch when is was released earlier this year. He will present examples of current and future possibilities the Apple Watch holds for news.

Tamás Szépvölgyi, CEO of the Sanoma Mobile Development Centre, will give an overview of the best smart watch news apps on the market as well as an introduction to the approach different publishers have selected.

– From PURCS in Brazil, Pr Eduardo Pellanda – who has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Mobile Experience Lab – will introduce workshop participants to the research on wearables.

The workshop will be a combination of inspirational talks, roundtable discussions, group exercises, case studies and hands-on experience with both the consumer side of receiving news on wearable devices as well as writing for smart watches in various journalistic forms.
